John Hunter And The Mayan Gods Slots

If you like your slots with a “one more spin” pull and a storyline that feels like an action movie, John Hunter and the Mayan Gods delivers. You’re stepping into a lost Maya Civilization world packed with glowing relics, powerful deities, and that classic high-energy vibe Pragmatic Play is known for.

It’s an adventure-themed video slot that keeps things simple to learn, but exciting when the features kick in. Between expanding wilds and a free spins round that can seriously heat up, this game is built for players who want fast pacing, bold visuals, and plenty of chances to land a memorable hit.

Simple Setup, Big Energy: Reels, Paylines, and Symbols

John Hunter and the Mayan Gods is a 5-reel slot with 10 paylines, so you’re not juggling a complicated layout. Wins land when matching symbols connect across active paylines, and the game’s symbols lean hard into the theme, mixing iconic characters with treasure-room classics.

You’ll spot standout premium symbols like the Gold Mayan Mask, Mayan Chief, John Hunter, and Quetzalcoatl, plus adventure props like the Goblet, Dagger, and Ring. The lower-paying card ranks (A, K, Q, and J) help fill the grid, which keeps spins frequent and easy to follow.

The Mayan Temple symbol is especially important, because it also acts as the scatter - and it’s your gateway to the main bonus feature.

The Best Part: Free Spins and Expanding Wilds That Change the Game

The core features here are built to feel dramatic, not subtle. When they trigger, you’ll notice the tempo shift right away.

The Free Spins Feature activates when you land the required Mayan Temple scatters. You’ll be awarded 12 free spins, and this is where the game can start feeling much more explosive than the base round. Free spins are your best chance to put together multiple strong connections without paying for every attempt, so it’s the moment most players wait for.

Then there’s the Expanding Wilds Feature, which adds that satisfying “everything just opened up” feeling when it hits. Wilds expand to cover more positions, boosting your odds of turning near-misses into full payline wins. In a 10-payline setup, a well-timed expanding wild can be the difference between a small payout and a screen that suddenly lights up with multiple wins at once.

Smart Play Tips to Stay in Control (and Enjoy the Ride)

This slot is designed to be straightforward, but a little planning can make your sessions feel smoother and more intentional.

Start by picking a comfortable stake based on how long you want to play, not just your maximum bet. With coin sizes ranging from $0.01 up to $1.00 (and options like $0.05, $0.10, $0.20, and $0.50), you can fine-tune your spin cost without overcommitting early. With coins per line up to 10 and a listed max bet of $100, it’s easy to scale up, but pacing yourself typically makes the feature chase more enjoyable.

A few quick, player-friendly habits that help:

• If you’re aiming to trigger free spins, consider staying at a steady bet level long enough to give the slot time to “breathe,” rather than jumping stakes every few spins.
• When you do raise your bet, do it for a reason - like a planned higher-stakes stretch - not just because a few spins were quiet.
• Treat expanding wilds as a momentum moment, not a guarantee. They can amplify wins, but they won’t always line up perfectly, so avoid tilting your bankroll trying to force a repeat.

And if you’re the type who likes this kind of cinematic, feature-forward playstyle, take a look at our Pragmatic Play slots collection for more games with a similar punchy feel.
